Celebrating Simon Levy

33 years of artistry, community, and impact.

A Legacy That Continues

For more than three decades, Simon Levy has been a guiding force at The Fountain Theatre shaping its artistic voice, deepening its commitment to socially engaged storytelling, and helping to build the vibrant community that surrounds it today.

Since joining the Fountain in 1993, Simon has served as Producing Director, director, playwright, and collaborator, guiding more than 50 productions and directing over two dozen plays. His work has brought bold, thought-provoking stories to the stage through productions that challenge, inspire, and connect audiences in lasting ways.

But beyond the productions themselves, Simon’s legacy lives in something even greater: the artists he has championed, the voices he has elevated, and the audiences he has invited into meaningful conversation.

As Simon steps back from the day-to-day operations of the theatre, we are honored that he will continue with us as Producing Director Emeritus, a role that reflects not only his extraordinary history with the Fountain, but his ongoing presence in its future.

He will remain an ambassador for the Fountain Theatre, continuing to support the work, the artists, and the values that have defined his time here.

This is not a farewell.

It is the beginning of a new chapter that allows us to celebrate all that has been built while continuing to carry forward the spirit of Simon’s work.

To honor his enduring impact, the Fountain Theatre is establishing the Simon Levy Social Justice Directing Award, supporting directors whose work reflects a deep commitment to storytelling that engages with the world around us. More details about the award will be shared in the coming months.

This summer, we will gather as a community to celebrate Simon’s remarkable body of work in conjunction with our benefit reading of Sizwe Bansi Is Dead. We hope you will join us.

We invite you to be part of this moment by sharing your memories, your reflections, your gratitude, and by helping to carry this legacy forward.
