RENACER: The Art of Rebirth

After more than a year of recovery from a career-threatening injury, Artistic Director and dancer Alexandra Rozo makes her fierce return to the stage. RENACER (Rebirth) is a traditional flamenco production that honors change, fresh beginnings, and the raw power of survival.

The evening takes audiences back to the deepest roots of the art form with a triumphant return to the soul of flamenco.

Amparo Heredia “La Repompilla”

Amparo Heredia “La Repompilla”, is a Gypsy flamenco cantaora (singer), born in Málaga in 1970. She began singing professionally at the age of 16 in Miami, introduced by Juan de Alba at the Costa Blanca tablao in that city. Despite her young age as a performer, she toured most of the flamenco tablaos in the most important US cities, including the Triana tablao, the "Cacharritos" tablao, and the cities of Chicago, New York, and Washington. Later, she joined Carlota Santana's company, where she worked for several years at the Symphony Space theater in New York. At the "El Flamenco" tablao in Mexico City, she spent a long season accompanying all the great artists who passed through as their singer. She returned to Spain and began working at Casa Patas, one of the most important flamenco tablaos in Madrid. She started making a name for herself in the capital, which led her to be requested by most dancers (bailaores). She worked with the company of the Málaga-born dancer La Lupi, and with the dancer Juan Andrés Maya, with whom she toured almost all of Spain with the shows Furia Maya, La Pasión, Tres Homenajes, and Salvajes. It could be said that Amparo has sung for almost all the leading figures of dance on the Spanish scene. On the 50th anniversary of Christian Dior, she performed in the Gardens of Versailles alongside Manuel Lombo. Amparo Heredia has dedicated her art and her voice to singing for dance, but this does not mean she is not a great solo singer (cantaora "alante"), as she has given recitals and performed on the stages of most flamenco clubs (peñas) in Málaga and the most important ones in Andalusia, such as the Peña Juan Brevas in Málaga, Peña el Piyayo, Peña la Platería in Granada, Peña Torres Macarena in Seville, etc. She has also performed in the most important festivals, such as the II Málaga Biennial, the Veranos del Corral del Carbón in Granada, the Otoños Flamencos in Granada, the provincial circuits of the Diputación de Málaga "Nos vemos en tu peña", and the tribute to Enrique Morente in the Generalife gardens. In 2017, she premiered her own show, "Herencia Flamenca," at the Tío Luis de la Juliana festival in Madrid, receiving great public acceptance and good reviews in the press. She has performed this show in a multitude of festivals and theaters, notably the Málaga Flamenco Art Biennial in 2017 and the Veranos del Corral cycle in Granada in 2018. In the year 2021, "LA REPOMPILLA" was honored with the highest awards in Flamenco Singing (Cante Flamenco) at the Cante de las Minas festival in La Unión, taking home four of the five prizes awarded:

MARIÁN FERNÁNDEZ

Born and raised in Granada, singer Marián Fernández began her vocal instruction at the age of 14 in the Escuela Superior de Arte Flamenco. Soon thereafter, she won 1st place, locally, at Granada’s Contest for Flamenco Youth and went on to win second place for the entire region of Andalucía. By 2019, Marián was performing professionally and took part in the Flamenco Festival “Viene del Sur,” touring Pakistan, Baku, and Antwerp. In 2020, Marián toured Brazil and Dubai as part of the show “Príncipes,” by Juan Andrés Maya, Antonio Canales, Amador Rojas, and Iván Vargas. She then performed with renowned flamenco pianist David Dorantes and singer Marina Heredia in the show “Esencias” and collaborated with Marina Heredia again in her show “Capricho” in 2021. Currently, Marián performs at acclaimed tablaos such as Teatro Flamenco Triana, La Casa del Flamenco, and Flamenquería, and most recently she won first place as the best singer (Granada) in the contest “Flamenco de los Montes” in Íllora, Spain.

Isaac Tovar

Isaac Tovar is a celebrated international flamenco dancer and choreographer from Seville, Spain. He was a longtime soloist of the Ballet Nacional de España, Compañía Andaluza de Danza, Compañía Antonio "El Pipa", and Compañía Aída Gómez, among many other premier national and international companies including Flamenco en Route and Flamenco Vivo. He was the soloist of the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía until early 2022. Tovar is the recipient of numerous 1st prizes in dance: at the renowned Concurso IV Internacional de Danza in Almería, the Concurso Nacional de la Perla de Cádiz and the XXVII Concurso Nacional de Ubrique. He won the 2nd prize for Solo Choreography in the XXV Certamen de Danza Española y Flamenco in Madrid. He performed as a semifinalist in the LIX Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas. Tovar's first solo production "Añejo" debuted in Seville in 2018 and his second production "Generaciones" premiered at the prestigious Royal Theater in Madrid in 2019. He has since choreographed and performed at Lincoln Center in a production of Bizet's Carmen. He was then featured alongside Esperanza Fernandez and conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto in performances of Falla's Amor Brujo and El Sombrero de Tres Picos at the New World Symphony Orchestra in Miami. Isaac headlined the Festival Flamenco at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto in Fall 2022 and was the invited artist at the Chicago Flamenco Festival with Ensemble Español in 2023. He then was principal dancer in the Detroit Opera's production of Ainadamar in Spring 2023 and the Welsh National Opera's production and UK tour. In 2024 Tovar participated in the prestigious Bravo Vail Festival in Colorado with the Orquestra Minera, under the direction of Carlos Miguel Prieto and accompanied by Esperanza Fernández, in the work "Amor Brujo" becoming the first Spanish classical and flamenco dancer to perform at such an acclaimed festival. In September, he was hired as a principal dancer and choreography assistant alongside Antonio Najarro at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and LAOPERA in Los Angeles in 2025 Apart from his own productions and performances, Tovar has been commissioned to create choreography for companies including: Flamenco Vivo, Ensemble Español, Esmeralda Enrique Spanish Dance Company and A Palo Seco Flamenco, among others. Over the years he has worked alongside flamenco legends such as José Antonio, Antonio Najarro, Antonio el Pipa, Belén Maya, Juana Amaya, Antonio Canales and Rafaela Carrasco among many other names.He received his higher education degree in Choreography and Interpretation from the Conservatorio Superior de Danza "Maria de Ávila" in Madrid and has decades of experience teaching flamenco and Spanish dance throughout Europe, Canada and the United States. Throughout his career he has danced in important theaters around the world, including: Place des Arts in Montreal, Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, Teatro de la Maestranza in Sevilla, Teatro Villamarta in Jerez, Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, Palace of Music in Moscow Chaillot Theater in Paris, Sadler's Wells of London, Bunkamura Theater in Tokyo, Peking Opera House, LAOPERA in LA, Lincoln Center, Joyce Theater and the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City.

Alexandra Rozo

Alexandra Rozo is an accomplished dancer, choreographer, and instructor whose dynamiccareer bridges elite classical training, television, and deep roots in traditional flamenco. First stepping onto the stage at the age of three, Alexandra has spent a lifetime cultivating a versatile and expressive physical language. She received her rigorous formal education at the prestigious New World School of the Arts in Miami, Florida, where she trained extensively in ballet, modern dance, and classical Spanish dance. Her foundational versatility quickly opened doors in the dance and entertainment industry. Alexandra has performed on some of America's biggest broadcast platforms, securing high-profile national television credits that include The Today Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Latin Billboard Awards, and American Idol. For over a decade, Alexandra has concentrated her artistic focus entirely on flamenco, discovering it to be the ultimate medium for her personal and creative expression. Driven by a commitment to absolute authenticity, she traveled to the roots of the art form in Spain. She trained intensively under the legendary Juana Amaya in Seville, as well as with Juana’s daughter, Nazaret Reyes. Today, Alexandra is a vital and sought-after figure in the Southern California flamenco landscape and has shared the stage with some of the most respected flamenco artists from both the U.S. and Spain. She has directed and performed for the acclaimed Forever Flamenco series at both the Fountain Theatre and the Ford Theatre. Her regional performance highlights also include the New World Flamenco Festival’s Flamenco Abierto in Irvine, Ca. Alongside her performances, Alexandra is dedicated to nurturing flamenco in her community and cultivating new talent within the art form, sharing her technique, rhythmic mastery, and deep emotion for flamenco through her weekly classes in Pasadena, California. She is currently working extensively with her students in preparation for the Alex Rozo Flamenco showcase on November 21st and 22nd, 2026

Christine Orihuela

Christine Orihuela was born and raised in Los Angeles, where she trained in ballet, classical Spanish dance and Mexican folklórico. This foundation led her to flamenco, a passion she has pursued under Briseyda Zarate and currently, Alexandra Rozo. She recently returned from Spain, where she studied with Juana Amaya, Juan Polvillo.

Tiana Alvarez

Tiana Alvarez is a multifaceted artist, dancer, and choreographer whose love of dance began at family gatherings before she could even walk. She began formal training at age four in Los Angeles, studying ballet, modern, and street dance styles. While pursuing her degree in Dance and Chicana/o Studies at University of California, Los Angeles, she discovered flamenco - the art form to which she has dedicated over 25 years of rigorous study, performance, and cultural practice. Tiana’s performance career spans collaborations with visionary artists and institutions including Peter Sellars, El Teatro Campesino, Donald Byrd, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, LA Opera, and the Grammy Award–winning band Quetzal. She has toured throughout the United States and Europe and has been a regular performer in Los Angeles and New York tablaos and stages since 2006. Her flamenco studies have taken her from Los Angeles and New York to Madrid and Sevilla, where she trained with esteemed maestros including La Meira, Nélida Tirado, Carmen Ledesma, Carmela Greco, Pastora Galván, El Oruco, Miguel “El Rubio,” El Choro, Lucía La Piñona, Miguel Ángel Heredia, and Pedro Córdoba. Tiana is a co-founding member of the flamenco collective Chicanas Gitanas, established alongside her beloved comadre and longtime creative collaborator, Briseyda Zárate. Together, they cultivated a bold, mujerista-centered flamenco voice rooted in cultural memory, friendship, and artistic rigor. From 2020–2024, Tiana and Briseyda co-directed Noches Flamencas as part of LA MusArt’s Courtyard Series,
creating dynamic performance platforms that amplified community-based flamenco artistry.
Her additional dance credits include Season 2 of Vida (Starz), The Barber of Seville, Carmen, and Cristina Hoyos’ choreography in El Gato Montes with LA Opera. This is her third appearance at the Fountain Theater. Tiana has served as a teaching artist with Center Theatre Group, The Music Center, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana, and LA MusArt in East Los Angeles. She is a recipient of scholarships from Jacob's Pillow (2008, 2011) and was a semi-finalist in The Music Center’s Spotlight Awards. Tiana Alvarez is a proud full-time dance faculty member with the Los Angeles Unified School District, where she continues to mentor and cultivate the next generation of artists with the same passion that first sparked her journey.

José Tanaka

Born in Kyoto Japan, and raised by a family steeped in the Flamenco arts.


 Tanaka ventured away from Flamenco and began playing the electric guitar at age 13 came to the United States to study Jazz, Blues, Latin and Rock styles and theory at the Musician's Institute in Hollywood, California and continued to perform with various bands throughout greater Los Angeles. 

 After being a guitar instructor for a few years, at the age of 24 Tanaka rediscovered his passion for Flamenco and pursued further study in Seville and Madrid, Spain.

He has performed with Antonio Rey, Joaquin Grilo, Belen Maya, Maria Juncal, Cocha Jareño, Carmen Ledesma, Manuela Rios, Ivan Vargas, Domingo Ortega, Juan Antonio Suarez “Canito”, Juan Triviño, Pedro Estache, Ramon Stagnaro, Efrain Toro, Luis Peña, Antonio Cortez "Chiquitete, Julia Migenes, David Williams, Jonathan Moffett, Eddie Miller.

José Tanaka has toured throughout the United States, Europe, Israel and Japan performing in many well-known places (Hollywood Bowl in LA, Olympia in Paris, Acropolis in Athens, Tarantos in Barcelona, El Flamenco in Tokyo etc.). 

José Tanaka released his debut album/CD “Gypsy’s Dream” in 1999. Featuring top session musicians percussionist Alex Acuña, wind player Pedro Estache. In 2004, he released his 2nd Flamenco album/CD “Lluvia” with Domingo Ortega and  Manuel De La Malena.
