A note from the Artistic Director:

CAMELO means I WANT in the gypsy dialect spoken throughout Spain and especially amongst the flamencos.

This is a show that explores the verb I WANT. “To want”, whether in Spanish or English, can be both an then active and a passive verb. Its most common synonym is “to desire”. However, its meaning can encompass more, depending on the context. For example, to want could mean you have a affinity with something, or it could mean you lack something and therefore have a need. To want, especially as used in Spanish, can also be used to express your love for someone – “Te camelo o lo he camelado.”

There are many ways and reasons to Want something, so we are simply expressing these different ways and moments of Wanting through dance and music. (This is a flamenco performance, despite the fact that non-traditional flamenco instruments are incorporated in the show.) Our goal is to express our personal I Want through movement and sound.

Believe it or not, this is Lakshmi’s last stateside show for 2016, so if you’re looking to get your flamenco fix from this daring dancer you’d best not delay because she’s going to DISAPPEAR for the rest of the year. No, I’m not making this up. She’s leaving for Spain. Adios amiga, take our love + gratitude with you.
